Enhance and enlarge a small image

Real 2× / 4× AI super-resolution · up to 25 MB · processed on your device

Or drag and drop, or paste with Ctrl + V. Files stay on your device.

How to use the AI Image Upscaler tool

  1. Choose a small photo

Select a JPG, PNG or WebP image up to 25 MB. Small, reasonably clear photos are the intended input.

  2. Choose 2× or 4×

Check the working input and expected output sizes. Large source images are reduced to fit the on-device processing limits.

  3. Run AI enhancement

The engine and model download on first use. The image is enhanced in tiles, with progress and a stop control.

  4. Compare and download

Inspect the before-and-after view. Save PNG to keep transparency or JPG with a white background behind transparent areas.

Why use UploadWell’s AI Image Upscaler?

Trained super-resolution
Uses local neural-network models rather than relying only on ordinary image resizing.
Two enlargement scales
Choose 2× or 4× based on your source and desired output.
Before-and-after inspection
Compare the working input with the generated result before saving it.
Actual dimensions shown
See source, working and output dimensions, including any reduction applied before inference.
PNG and JPG export
Keep source transparency in PNG output, or flatten transparent areas onto white for JPG.
On-device processing
The photo is not uploaded. Inference runs in your browser, with graphics acceleration when available.

What AI upscaling can improve

Ordinary resizing adds pixels using an interpolation rule. A trained super-resolution model uses patterns learned from example images to estimate a more detailed enlarged result. That can improve the appearance of small photos and graphics, particularly when you need a larger display copy.

The generated detail is still an estimate. It can alter tiny features, textures, letters or numbers, and cannot recover factual information that was absent from the source. Compare the result carefully and keep the original.

This is not a document-restoration or identity-verification tool. Do not treat generated characters or facial details as evidence of what the original contained. For actual printed-text extraction, use Image & PDF to Text and review its output.

Understand the processing and output limits

To limit browser memory use, 2× processes a source with a longest edge of up to 1,024 pixels, while 4× uses up to 768 pixels. A larger original is reduced before enhancement. The settings panel shows the expected size before you run it, and the result reports the actual dimensions.

For example, a 400 × 300 px source can become 800 × 600 px at 2×, or 1,600 × 1,200 px at 4×. A much larger camera photo is not enlarged at its full original dimensions in this workflow. If it already has enough resolution, Resize Image may be a better fit for a straightforward size change.

The model processes overlapping tiles to control memory use. Small sources complete faster; larger working images can take noticeably longer on older phones or browsers without graphics acceleration. Stop enhancement cancels between processing steps.

Choose the right download format

PNG avoids an additional lossy save and preserves the source alpha channel, scaled to the result’s dimensions. JPG is useful for photographic output when a smaller file is preferable, but fills transparent pixels with white and applies a high-quality lossy save.

Changing the download format does not run the AI model again. Output images are newly rendered copies and do not copy the original camera or GPS metadata. Use Compress Image after enhancement if the result exceeds a destination’s file-size limit.

For a product cutout, Background Remover can isolate the subject in a separate step. Use Image Combiner & Collage when you need to arrange several finished images into one layout.

Private models, local processing

The first enhancement downloads TensorFlow.js, UpscalerJS and a small trained model from UploadWell. The runtime uses your browser’s graphics backend where available, with a CPU fallback. Your photo is not sent to an AI service or a paid API.

Results are kept in the current page until you download them. Refreshing or closing the page discards the working state. No sign-up is required, and UploadWell does not add a branding watermark to the enhanced image.

Frequently asked questions

Is this AI enhancement or normal resizing?

The enhancement step uses trained super-resolution models. Separate resizing is only used to fit oversized inputs into the browser workflow.

Can I upscale by 2× and 4×?

Yes. Choose a scale and check the working input and expected output dimensions before running it.

Does a large original keep its full resolution?

Large sources are reduced first: 2× accepts up to a 1,024-pixel working edge and 4× up to 768 pixels. The actual sizes are shown.

Will AI recover the correct text or missing facial detail?

No guarantee is possible. The model estimates detail and can change small features. Keep the original and do not treat generated detail as factual recovery.

Can I preserve a transparent background?

Yes. Choose PNG output. The original alpha channel is resized and applied to the enhanced image.

Are images uploaded?

No. Models are downloaded to your browser and the enhancement runs on your device.
