Remove a photo’s background

One clear subject works best · up to 25 MB · private AI processing on your device

Or drag and drop, or paste with Ctrl + V. Files stay on your device.

How to use the Background Remover tool

  1. Choose a photo

Select a JPG, PNG or WebP image up to 25 MB. A clearly visible main subject gives the compact model its best chance.

  2. Remove the background

The engine and model download on first use, then process the photo on your device. Inspect the result before saving.

  3. Refine and choose a background

Use Erase to remove unwanted areas or Restore to bring back original photo content. Choose transparency, white or a custom colour.

  4. Download the cutout

Save PNG for transparency or JPG for a solid background. The output keeps up to a 2,048-pixel longest edge.

Why use UploadWell’s Background Remover?

Automatic foreground detection
A trained U²-Net model estimates the main subject and its alpha mask.
Transparent PNG export
Save a cutout for use in a collage, product listing or other design.
White or custom backgrounds
Create a clean solid-background copy without another editing application.
Erase and restore brushes
Correct missed edges or bring back parts of the original photo.
Before-and-after comparison
Compare the original and processed image, and reset manual work to the AI mask.
Private processing
The photo stays on your device; it is not uploaded to a background-removal service.

Remove backgrounds for product photos and everyday designs

A transparent cutout lets you place a product, person or object on another background. A white-background copy is useful for many product-photo workflows, while a custom colour can match a graphic or presentation.

This tool uses a compact foreground-segmentation model designed to run in a browser. It estimates the main subject rather than understanding every object perfectly. Photos with one distinct subject and clear contrast are generally easier than crowded scenes, fine transparent materials or complicated hair.

Check the destination’s requirements independently. Creating a white background does not certify compliance with a marketplace, passport or other submission standard.

Refine the mask with erase and restore

After automatic removal, select Erase unwanted areas and brush over background that remains. Select Restore original photo to bring back source content that the model removed. Brush size is relative to image width, so a smaller value is useful near fine edges.

These edits change the transparency mask; they do not alter your source file. Reset to AI edges discards manual brush edits and restores the initial model mask. Before / after provides a comparison view, while Result & touch-up enables brush interaction.

Transparent objects, shadows, low-contrast boundaries and very fine details can need manual correction. A cutout is an estimate, so inspect it against both light and dark backgrounds before using it in an important design.

PNG, JPG and output resolution

PNG supports transparent pixels. JPG does not, so transparent areas are filled with white unless you have selected another solid background. Changing the export format does not run the model again.

The working output has a longest edge of up to 2,048 pixels. Larger originals are reduced to fit this on-device workflow, and the result shows its actual dimensions. The model predicts a smaller alpha mask that is resized to the output image; keeping the original pixel count would not itself guarantee more detailed edges.

Hidden source metadata is not copied into the new image. Your original remains unchanged. Use Image Combiner & Collage to arrange finished cutouts or Compress Image to meet an upload-size limit.

How private AI background removal works here

UploadWell serves the runtime and model files to your browser. The first use needs a download and some setup time. The photo itself is processed locally and is not sent to a remote AI API.

Browser memory, processor speed and model limitations affect the experience. Stop processing takes effect after the current model step. If the subject cannot be identified reliably, choose another photo or use the brush controls to refine a usable initial result.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove a background for free?

Yes. Choose a supported photo and process it locally. No account or paid API is required.

Can I download a transparent PNG?

Yes. Choose Transparent background and PNG output.

Can I make the background white?

Yes. Select White product background, then download PNG or JPG.

Can I fix parts the AI removes incorrectly?

Yes. Use the restore brush to bring back source content or the erase brush to remove unwanted areas.

Does it keep the original resolution?

It keeps output up to a 2,048-pixel longest edge. Larger photos are reduced first, and actual output dimensions are displayed.

Is my photo uploaded to an AI company?

No. The model runs on your device using files downloaded from UploadWell.
